I usually respond at least once. Most of my contacts are friendly and even when the mail was to challenge something I said it was an amicable disagreement.
I have had no problem so far. I think it is OK to send one mail to a person unsolicited but if they don't reply wait at least 3 days to make a second attempt. If they still don't answer leave them alone.
I do decline to answer anything that even remotely looks like spam and I never trust links in emails from anyone I don't know. I will do a search for the site if it interests me but not from the link in the mail.
Most of the time when someone wants to chat with me a bit about something the emails go back and forth for a day or two.(with two to six posts @ way) After that we let it drop.

That's the whole reason you choose whether or not to make your email available or private. You know if you have it posted that people will email you and you should respond back. It's kind of an "unwritten" and polite expectation. If you have no intentions of emailing back then you should keep your email private. The only exception to this would be if someone was really rude or mean, of course!
Funny, but I've noticed that the ones who keep their email private are many times the ones with biggest mouths and/or have snotty, mean things to say. Funny how that works. I have never regretted responding to an email .. they have all been nice and/or supportive of what I've had to say. Or they just want to know more about me. That's cool ... it's a safe way to communicate with someone you don't know.

I get hate mail from dolts who consider it some obscene affront to their delicate little egos that I have the audacity to have an opinion contrary to their own.
I ignore them, unless their venomous missive is hideously written. Then I reply and correct their spelling, grammar, and/or syntax. I'm NOTHING if not helpful.
