Manuals are quicker out of the hole but shifting gears automatic is quicker. Alot of cars race using a manual valve body on a automatic. It all boils down to the driver , then the car setup.

given otherwise equal cars, hp rating etc. a car with a manual transmission wil be quicker than a car with an automatic. why? a few reasons;

1: rotating mass. the automatic uses clutch drums, along with friction and steel plates, and a planetary gear set. this all adds up to weight that needs to be accelerated. the gear set of the manual transmission is lighter.

2: friction. all the bands and clutch plates, etc. and the lack of roller bearings add up to more friction loss than in a manual transmission.

3: pumping losses. the automatic uses hydraulic pressure, and that also uses up hp. the manual transmission uses splash lubrication.

4: then there is the torque converter compared to the clutch. the converter loses power through pumping losses, and is limited to one stall speed, where as the clutch has a much wider range of launch rpms.

now while the manual transmission car is quicker, the automatic car is more consistent. this is great on the drag strip in the bracket classes, but on the road course the manual transmission reigns supreme.

It's been proven many times in race cars. You have to know what you are doing when you shift. Although it's not faster, I can shift a manual transmission all the way up and down, by listening to the engine---I wouldn't recommend it. I also used to shift the old army 3/4 ton trucks by just jamming the gears (my power shift).

Back in the late 50's and early 60's the automatics had a lot of slip in them and were slower than the manual shift cars. There was about 1/2 second difference in quarter mile times. Today, with all the improvements in the transmissions, the auto's are just as fast, and in some cases, even faster than the manual.

So it was true, back in the day, but it is a different day now.

Most cars with automatics have 4 gears to go through. Most stick shifts have 5. One of those gears is overdrive, and one is 1 to 1, that leaves 3 gears for reducing the rpms in to torque on a stick shift, and only 2 on an automatic. When you have more gears to work with, you can stay in your engines power-band longer and accelerate faster

Automatic transmissions lose HP from having to use the automatic instead of shifting directly from the engine plus you can wind them out more or stay higher in the powerband.

Go to the drag races very few stick shift. Automatics.Some small cars yes but real hp no.To much lost between shifts.

Automatics rely on fluid dynamics to move Manua trannies have a direct link from engine to wheels. Thus you dont have the "slip" that you have in the automatic.

You can keep each gear as long as you won't that is called winding it out , However you have to know when to shift , hope this helps.

i ve seen vids where they had the same cars (auto and manual trans) race. The manual transmission car won by couple of car lengths.
So, manual trans is faster.
