I was wondering what the compresion should be on a 1973 pontiac 400 engine . My engine as tested is 90lbs to 100lbs.
Cylinders 1-95 2-95 3-95 4-95 5-90 6-100 7-90 8-100.
Engine will not stay running backfires through car spewing gas when it back fires when it does run it sputters and stall when put in gear

that's very low compression..should be around 160...you got a timing chain jumped my friend...trust me on this one change the timing chain and you will be in business

well the compression is a little low but i would be looking at the timing chain instead. had one been there before. remove the distibutor cap and rotate the crank one way until the rotor moves and then back the other way, if it goes more than 30 degrees or so its toast

may be the timing chain has jumped a tooth.. wanted to jump back in here and advise you to take a good look at the timing chain cover when you get it off as they tend to corode and allow coolant to get in the oil

compression is pretty even, maybe a little worn
But that shouldn't cause problem, check your timing and fuel air mixtue, sounds like your rich.
