Indians are Asians according to the US Census and Middle Easterners are considered "White" (I know it sounds odd, but its true)

Generally, Indians will call themselves South Asian instead of just Asian because it is a very broad term.

I asked this to the people that own the 7-11 down the street from my house, and they said they would consider themselves Asian. One of them is Punjab and he looks more like a white guy with dark skin. The owners are Northern Indian and they look kind of mixed like asian and white, kind of like a polynesian. And the other guy is from Nepal and he kind of looks like a mexican. But they all kind of look middle eastern.

"Asian" usually refers to ethnicity, not the home continent, otherwise, Brazilians would be Americans.
