When a team is ONE game behind in the standings, then they would catch up by winning when the team ahead of them loses.
ex: 1-0 team ahead's record
0-1 team behind's record
after the second game has been played, they both are 1-1 and thus tied in the standings
say one team has a record of 1-0 and the second team is 0-0. They would only be 1/2 game behind since the teams have an odd number of games different played.
so to catch up in the standings, either the team ahead by a 1/2 game needs to lose, or the team behind by a 1/2 game has to win to make the teams even.

Becasue not all teams have played the same amount of games. Its just a way to figure out who actually is in front of the division. The teams gain a half point for winning and they also gain a half point if the teams behind them lose.

The standings are based on winning percentage so when teams play different numbers of games (a team has an off day when the other team has a game), there's less than one game difference between the percentages.

a half game signifies that one team has played a game when the other had a bye...so if there is a team ahead by 1 1/2 games it is really only one "winning game" over the other team....the half just means they have played when the other team didnt

if you have one team with one more loss than the other, but the same number of wins then you're considered to be a half-game back. Or the same number of losses but one more win as well.
