I could, but it would take a lot more space than is available here to do a good job. Try looking up author Don Peretz, he does a fair job of telling all sides.

They already lived there. The Brits created Palestine which was undeveloped desert, the Palestinians lived there, as did the Jewish Israelis. When the Protectorate ended the Brits favored an Arab State, and made sure the Arabs were armed and the Jewish Europeans left from the ovens of the Germans were denied entrance into Palestine. The Jews fought for the country and won, the Arabs figured it was only a short time until their other Arab brothers would come to their aid and so they left, in some cases selling their property to the Jews, again the Arabs figured they would be back, not only taking back their land, but with Jewish money in their pockets. It didn't happen that way. Other Arab countries didn't want the Palestinians in their land and limited their entrance, they did not fight for the Palestinians. The refugees stayed that way and still are refugees. The Israelis built many irrigation projects and 'made the desert bloom'. Now the Palestinians really want it back that all the hard work has been done. When the Arabs were in Jerusalem Jews couldn't go to their holy places, they were barred from them.
Now all religions can go to their holy places
The Palestinians lost a war, that's what happens in war, they were treated no better and no worse than any other loser in war.
Israeli statehood was recognized first by the US in the UN.
No one gave it to them, no one even expected them to have a country, they earned it, the hard way.

It's the Jewish homeland. Jews have been living there for thousands of years.
In fact, until the 1970s, the only people called "Palestinians" were Jews. Or, more precisely:
"The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism."
-PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein, 1977

Not a direct answer to your question, but since you're asking about this, you might want to read a new novel from Michael Chabon called "The Yiddish Policemen's Union". It's a fictional take on what might have happened if, instead of the Middle East, the Jews had been temporarily settled in Alaska under a 60-year mandate. In the novel, that 60 years is coming to an end... and NOW what?

It was decided first to be in Argentina or in one of the countries in Africa. England, France, USA, USSR has their own strategic benefits. Palestine was under the British mandate beside other countries in the middle east. After the WW2 England and France were going and USA, USSR were coming. Europe wanted to get rid and finish the problem of the Jews. At the same time they wanted to keep a kind of control in the Middle east. USA and USSR were going in a race for everything in the world. Palestine is in the middle of the Arab countries.
All the major powers wanted to stop Arab countries to develop and they wanted to keep them busy with conflicts all the time. Israel was and still a kind of a war company, they all invested in it to make the dirty job. From the other side the major powers were getting closer to the Arab countries to use all their resources and gain more influence in this important area rich of strategic resources (like Oil). Europe and USA needed these resources more, so they invested in Israel more to play the game.

Ok, the first thing you have to understand, is there were no palestine people.
There was no country called palestine.
There was no country there before 1947.
The area that is now jordan, israel and palestine, belonged to Syria during the latter ottoman empire, or more correctly, was under the control of the Vilayet of Syria .
After WW l, Britian was given a mandate over this territory called Transjordan.
Britian decided to break Transjordan into two sections, those east of the Jordan River and those west of the Jordan River.
Britian latter decided to break the west Transjordan into two sections, one for jews and one for arabs.
Britian could have just as easily, broken all of transjordan into two sections, one for arabs and one for jews.
There were no historical countries in this area, the area had been controlled by the Ottoman Empire for far to long.
The historical countries, were broken out from the Ottoman Empire after WW l, ie: arabia, syria, iraq.
But in reality, there is no difference between the arabs who lived west of the Jordan river from those who lived east of the Jordan river.
It was just an arbitrary line drew by britian in 1921.

This link will answer your question.
basically when the British decided to give Israel a section of Palestine, the Jews blatantly defied orders to cease entering Palestinian territory and sneaked in by boat in the night.
Israel has outright defied UN resolutions since then to get back behind their border.
***the Jews that lived there before are not the same that are there now. Israel has a policy to encourage emigration, and offers money and land to Jews from Europe and the US to go live there.
You asked how they chose that land, because Jews think they are Gods chosen people, and that because they are Jewish that land belongs to them. It's in their Torah.
*** If there was no Palestine, then who the hell was living there before it became Israel? Are those people nobodies because the name Palestine was given by the Brits? as a matter of fact, there was a Palestine with people living there and now their world has been turned upside down because Zionists think they are 'God's chosen people' and therefore Israel is theirs.
How it was handled went awry because Israel decided that Palestinians are an eye sore, and is eliminating this 'problem' through genocide.

Also look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Mandate_of_Palestine
But yea I always wondered that too. How in the hec did that get in that mess first place?

When Israel was created there were no such things as palestinians. Israel was created 3300 years ago and the palis didn't exist until 1948. Read your Bible and you can read all about it.
