It makes the clothes softer on your skin, they smell good, and cuts down on static cling. Ever had a pair of pants or a skirt stick to your legs while tring to walk? Use fabric softener to eliminate the problem. I have also found that if you use it on every load of towels,, it makes them less absorbent, so I skip every other time, or just use dryer sheets with them.

To be honest you really dont need fabric softener. It doesnt make much of a difference to the softest of clothes all it really does it makes them smell nice. However id rather wear purfume to smell nice.
Fabric softener can be good to use on bed sheets thou as its lovely to get into a nice smelling bed although some of the fragrances of fabric conditioners can be over powering so choice a nice one if you use one!

to soften the fabric- ever use a "crispy" towel?? No fun.
to reduce static cling from the electricity generated in the dryer.
to help reduce wrinkling.
to add a pleasant fragrance, although if one's skin is sensitive, one can use a fragrance free version.

It is not necessary, some reasons people use it is:
* Soft to touch & reduce irritation on skin from certain fabrics.
* fragrance
* reduces chance of wrinkles
* almost eliminates static cling
* eliminates 'stiffness' in fabrics like towels, jeans, etc...

I use fabric softener when drying clothes. They don't wrinkle as much and have a good odor.

I agree with most of the other responders. The only way for you to really find out is to do a load of laundry without it. You will see.

it softens your clothes, gives them a fresh scent and I use it to avoid static cling. you can take those sheets if your hair has fly aways and rub on your head and it will give you a soft look
