Here's the thing. If you want SPEED, you get HEAT. You can pick the latest Intel Dual Core, or the AMD 64. But if you go for long lasting batteries and cool running, then look for Intel Centrino.
If you go LIGHT, then you get a small screen. If you go with BIG SCREEN, then you get HEAVY.
That's why I recommend that you visit a retail store and LOOK. If the computers are turned ON, you can see which ones are HOT, which ones are LIGHT and which ones have a BIG Screen. Visit a retailer that has a great return policy, so you don't get hassled if you have to return it. ASK.
At this point, you want LOTS of USB ports. Skip the floppy drive and parallel printer port. Move into a brave new future.
But look at Toshiba first. Their tech support is terrific and they are well made. My 2nd choice would be HP.
Once you pick the computer, you might need to expand the RAM right away. You see, with Windows Vista, it works best with 2GB or more. You can always get a bargain, then ADD RAM. Look up that new system at http://www.coastmemory.com and MAX it out for a fraction of the price.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

One good choice would be the Dell 1520 with an intel core 2 duo t7300.

Overview
The update of Dell's popular E1505, the Inspiron 1520 has generated a lot of interest in the notebook community. It features a complete design update, the new Intel Santa Rosa platform, and the best graphics card Dell has ever offered in a laptop of this size. With this notebook, Dell is making a solid entrance into the 15” performance market. The 1520 has tangible benefits over other 15” notebooks that only offer the 8400M and 1280x800 resolution like the HP dv6500t, and it tends to be less expensive than similarly featured notebooks like the Asus G1S.

in a laptop its not the critical component ... core2duo is fine though ... you could put a top of the line core2duo laptop next to a p4 and the one with the fastest harddrive u would think is the fastest ... its just not important in a laptop unless u do heavy duty video editing or somthing like that on it ...
