Good Q - I'll take some time ...
Broughton Pass Appin, NSW, Australia
It is a deep gorge with a very steep road winding down to the Cataract River - beautiful - but it was the knowledge of the history that moved me and the sense I had that the history was still alive.
In 1816, after a 5 years of drought some indigenous people raided the settlements of the white colonialists that had taken their land as the town of Sydeny expanded westward. They were mostly Durug people.
The Governor of NSW MacQuarie was away and a Luitenant-Governor gave an order for the army to "teach the blacks a lesson". Three contingents of soldiers were sent in three directions. One did nothing, one talked to the aboriginal people they found looking for the raiders and the third came across the men's camp of the elders of the Dharawal people.
The elders were the lawmakers for the people and were determining whether the law was satisfied in a case. The soldiers cut off the heads of 14 elders and returned to Sydney town - with the proof of their diligence in sacks.
The stockmen who had been following the soldiers looking for retribution (maybe excitement/fun??) continued the hunt and found the nearby women and childrens' camp. For three days they persued the women and children across the tops until eventually the last of the people threw themselves / were chased off the cliffs at Broughton Pass. Five children survived.
The area near Broughton Pass was a sacred area to the Dharawal people as it was the place of the creation in the dreaming.
Reconciliation is an important issue in indigenous relations - apology is important too.
Thanks
Joe

Keystone, Colorado. The snow-covered mountains were just so breathtaking it was like something I had only seen on t.v. or pictures in a book...only I don't think that could even describe how beautiful it was...I went snowshoeing (hiking with these things that look like over sized tennis rackets on my feet) on this snow covered trail to the top of a hill and took wonderful pictures. It was so beautiful..I attempted to ski...again note the word attempted put failed miserably at it so friends and I took a day and went to Breckenridge, Co. to go shopping that was awesome too...but the most coolest thing is riding the gondola at night up to the summit and watching the sunset and seeing the skiers go down that "Big" hill while you are way up there in a covered car riding on a cable...it's an awesome experience...I would not take anything for my trip to Keystone.

Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley, California. The lake is beautiful and you are in awe of God's creation. When you take the tram up the mountain at Squaw Valley...Have lunch at the cafe at the top and you can look down on Lake Tahoe and the entire valley below.
Also, Big Bear and Forrest Falls, California..both up in the San Bernardino Mountains. Beautiful!! Forrest Falls you walk up the trail to the waterfall and there is actually a rock right in the middle of the creek where you can sit and look over the edge of the waterfall...absolutely breathtaking!!!!!

on a trip to Egypt(to teach the Egyptian air force an aircraft mod for 63 days) , the first day I took a horseback ride around the great pyramids on the Giza plateau and stood next to the sphinx...the sun went down and they had lights all over the three pyramids and the sphinx and it was amazing...the next day we went crawling thru two of them, the big one and the smaller one, the other wasnt open...when you see how big they are, go inside where the sarcophagi were and how you cant put a credit card thru where the two ton rocks sit on each other, you realize that it is once in a lifetime to see something like this, so huge, amazing for that era, so precise...then later in the trip we went to Alexandria, close to where the lighthouse originally was...we had seen two of the sites of the original 7 wonders of the world...
