It is one of the most incredible series of books ever written. If I hadn't had a child, I never would have read any of them. But because she was reading them, I wanted to find out what the hoopla was about so I picked up the first one. It hooked me immediately. I was an English major and have written all my life - I recognize great writing when I see it, whether it is marketed to children or not. Even though children are the main characters, the story line is very complex and deep, and it pulls you in. To not read it would be like saying Lord of the Rings is only for hobbits! :)
Now I am not one of those crazed fans who dresses up and camps out all night for the book release. But everybody's gotta have their passion in life, and there are much worse things to get obsessed with! So I say kudos to them... do what you wanna do.

It is something that has to do with imagination. I love the movies, and I read a lot of Sci-Fi and fantasy books. My favorites are more the sword & sorcery kind of books & movies. The Harry Potter series just falls into that. I've see the first 4 movies, and will be seeing the 5 one in a couple of days.
If you go to see one of these movies, open your mind and let your imagination run wild as you watch it. It's a story that you get involved with in your mind. The only reason Potter-mania has been going on for so long is because there are so many books to the series, and where there are the books, there are the movies and all the other stuff that goes along with it. It'll be over in a decade or two. :-)

Harry grows up in the books and becomes an adult in the process so it's pretty much for everyone. Just because it stared out as a children's book doesn't mean it hasn't grown into something for adults. Plus a lot of people were kids when they started and now they are adults who still stick with the story.

Who says adults don't enjoy a good read, too?
There are themes in th Harry Potter books that are timeless, and not just for kids. The power of love, the loyalty of true friends, and, of course, the whole good vs. evil thing.
As for the fantasy aspect, well, I recall someone once saying (it may have been JRR Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) that, far from NOT needing fantasy, the adult mind may need it even more than the childish one does.

if you read the books you'll see that they're actually pretty dark. some of the things are scary and could easily frighten a child. these books are not made specifically for children. thats why they are big among all age groups. if you ask me i think tahst pretty da(m)n impressive! j.k. rowling is one hel l of an author, if she can get people of all ages to read the same book series!

have you ever read the books? obviously not since you have no perception of it! they are actually very adult in some parts since you know the main theme of the series is DEATH. so why dont you stop bashing harry potter and pick up one of the books instead!
