Saltwater fish drink or draw in water via the mouth and the gills take care of processing the water and get rid of the salts. They must do this because their environment, the ocean, is more saltier than the liquids in their bodies. On the other hand freshwater fish DO NOT drink but go through a process called osmosis. In fish terms this basically means that the water passes through the freshwater fish skin cells and into its body. Freshwater fish are opposite from saltwater fish in their bodies are more saltier than the lakes, rivers, streams, etc. Overall the saltwater/freshwater fish need to balance the salts in their tissues to maintain a stable concentration so they don't shrivel up (saltwater fish) or fill up with too much water (freshwater fish). Hope that helps!

Fish that live in fresh water have the problem of having a higher salt concentration inside their cells than outside their cells. Their little kidneys are constantly pumping water out of their bodies to keep them from blowing up like little balloons. Salt water fish have just the opposite problem, they are constantly having to pump salt out of their blood to keep from shriveling up. In both cases there is no need for the fish to drink water.

somehow, they use it to respire ( as atmosphere for human ) and also every living organism drink water and depend on water in it's physical processes
so of course it drinks water (just in need) like any living organism
