The biggest single reason why no country has gone to the moon since the final Apollo mission (Apollo XVII left the lunar surface 14 December 1972) is *cost.*

To quote from the NASA Human Space Flight site:

"After the last lunar landing, total funding for the Apollo program was about $19,408,134,000. The budget allocation was 34 percent of the NASA budget."

This means (roughly) that each Apollo cost some $1,141,654,941.18.

The rough equivalent costs today would be some $5,502,775,370.49 for a single mission, and some $93,547,205,880 for the entire program.

The staggering cost of a space program is why the Soviets never reached the moon with a manned craft themselves.

Public attention had begun to fade — the Apollo XIII near-disaster serves as an example, the mission was virtually ignored by the media until the accident.

Returning to the Moon is already in the works. And rightly so, launching a manned mission to Mars will be *much* easier to do from lunar orbit (or even the lunar surface) than it would be from Earth. It will require far less energy to leave the Moon, so spacecraft aimed at the outer planets can carry much more than they could if launched from earth.

Oh, and just for amusement's sake, I've also included a link to a small article debunking the top ten "reasons" that folks have put forward for the moon landings having been faked. (Most such reasons have more to do with a misunderstanding of how things work beyond our planet's atmosphere than they do to some vast conspiracy.)

The people spreading that rumour were too young to remember.
They comment about the flag; it was explained at the time.
The flag had a wire in it, because there was no breeze.
The return take-off was videoed remotely from the lander.
The moon-landing was done in memory of JFK.
The cost was humungous;-{ so the program was suspended.
After the shuttle program shuts down, we'll return to the moon.
It will be our jumping off point for Mars.
Another possibility is mining the asteroids for minerals.
Then we could assemble star-ships on the moon.

The reason that the flag appears to flutter is simply down to Physics, as the astronaut places the flag he twists the pole which made the flag appear to flutter as the pole flexes even in a zero atmosphere enviroment, the truth is that the flag only appeared to flutter, simple really, the moon landings definitely happened and there are plans afoot to return there in the not too distant future. Read the biographies of the men who went to the Moon, the whole adventure they underwent changed their lives in sometimes dramatic ways. they were pioneers and that should not be taken away from them by a bunch of crackpots who fail to understand relatively simple science and use this lack of understanding to discredit a great human adventure.

We've had broadcasts from Mars from the rovers? The truth is, the novelty of space broadcasts has worn off from the cold war era. Indeed, the moon landings were just as much propaganda as they were cultural curiosity.

I have something to say about all those people who think the moon landing was fake.......you guys are really ignorant..... If you pay attention to the moon landing footage you'll notice that you can see the the whole Earth......where do you suppose they got the picture of the whole Earth? Satellites aren't far enough away from the Earth to have taken such a shot, to later use in a film....have you thought about that one?

Moon landings like almost everything in the media is a story made up for people to believe or disbelieve. Our world is full of illusions like that - at least your in reality!

There has been numerous moon landings since Apollo 11. However public interest in the space program has rapidly declined since then.

The mass public are no longer interested in moon landings therefore they weren't broadcast.

This is also the reason that NASA ended moon landings in the mid-seventies.

Because technology has only advanced 199% and the first moon landing was about 1879.
Do try to marshall your facts and put foward a cogent argument.

many people (including myself) 'like' to believe that the moon landing is true...but, until i've been there myself i will not believe it. there are sooo many things to say it didn't happen.
