You're describing a touring bike. Touring bikes have eyes that enable you to mount racks for carrying the stuff you'll need on the road. All that stuff can get heavy, so touring bikes also have stronger wheels with more spokes than normal road bikes and more powerful gears, like mountain bikes. The tires are often a bit bigger than road bikes to provide a smoother ride and also avoid pinch flats. The prototypical touring bike is the Trek 520. Take a look at one in a Trek dealer to see how it's made and set up. That will give you guidance for trying to get one cheaper. HTH

depends on the crotch rocket ...i hate that term by the way :)
these type of bikes range from very uncomfortable, such as
RC51
R6
GSXR's
916
etc...
to the moderately to very comfortable, such as
VFR's
older ZX6 E models
YZF600R
some CBR's
You will usually find that sportbikes have made a transition over the years to a more racey and uncomfortable position as they have become more specialized for racing. Bikes that have not been designed for racing usually fall into the Sport Tourer catagory. These are more Sporty Bikes then Sportbikes. Keep in mind that I am only talking about full or half fairing crotch rockets here...not cruisers or standards.
There are a huge amount of bikes that fall into the sport-tourer catagory. Some are more SPORT and some are more TOUR. Its a huge market and you have a lot of choices.

It depends on the type of sport bike. The "race replica" or "supersport" types generally aren't. Others are designed with a bit more comfort in mind; a Hayabusa, VFR Interceptor, or Katana is something you could reasonably take on a long trip if your skills were up to it. I ride a GS500F sport bike, and after about two hours on it the only really uncomfortable thing is the stock seat. But I wouldn't try that on a GSX-R600.

Crotchrocket is a good name for the majority of people who ride them.(but not all) Sports bike not good name unless there on a track. Anyway as far as long distance it has a lot to do with your age and the condition of your back. There are ways to make them more comfortable but not comfortable!

No they are not comfortable on long hauls. It takes a special breed to ride any bike a long distance though. About 300 miles is most of your adverage bikers limit per day. The larger and heavier the bike the more comfortable it is to ride long distances. 20 or 30 minute breaks every 200 miles or so will help alot on long trips.

I switched my focus from a sportbike to a sporttourer for just that reason. I found that a Honda Interceptor was my best solution, also Honda makes removable hardbags for it. One trick I use is I fill my tankbag and lay on it when the road gets straight.
My back has it's own problems and I tend to do better in the lay down position than in a more normal riding position without back support.

Crotchrockets are great for everything! Going 120 through the city, racing your friends, hitting trees. They're awesome for long trips. As long as the trip is just 50 miles.

I wouldn't recommend them unless you bring a chiropractor along.
Distance riders pay a lot of attention to setting up a comfortable seating position.
You'd be surprised how bad you'll feel after say 3 hours on a rocket, and thats just your first fuel stop of the day.

First of all, they are sportbikes. Those of us that ride and own them cringe when you say *crochrockets*.
Second, there are a few out there that are one step between sportbike and sport tour.
Kawasaki ZX-11, ZX-12
Suzuki Hayabusa
Honda XX or Blackbird
They are larger, and meant more for the long straights than for the twistie roads. Though, that doesn't mean they can't with a capable rider.
The seating position is not as comfortable as, say a BMW GS or RT. But, they have add-ons and I know plenty that have done it. (even have friends that do IBI's (Iron Butt Invitationals) on Hayabusas.
