You've hit on the big part -- you have to love the writing first. If you can argue about whether a comma should be in your story or not, it's a good sign.

Practice writing for your school paper, and study hard in English. Then take a look at colleges that specialize in journalism. You can intern at news outlets and/or work for the school newspaper there. That way, you can see if you like it.
