Ryan,
The answer is: many Asians in various different countries eat dogs and cats.

These are just a handful of the sites available that will illustrate the reality that many people around the world eat dogs and cats. It's not a myth. Considering that many people all around the world eat a wide variety of animals, it's not even surprising.
Please understand: My 2 dogs are my family, and I would not eat dog meat. I don't think I could eat cat meat and enjoy it even.
However, I have reconciled my ethics to the eating of beef, chicken, and pork, and if I liked the flavor - I'd also go for deer, goat, and sheep.
I don't feel that eating beef is wrong. However - Hindus consider cattle to be holy animals, and would never eat them. It would be inconceivable to them. Anyone who has raised cattle however - knows that they are intelligent and very sensitive (yes. sensitive. A mother cow moos and cries for several days when her calf is sold to another farm or dairy. There will be big streaks of tear stains on their jaw bones on both sides. ). The French people consider horsemeat a very nice option for dinner. Until recently, and I think it got shut down, but there was one of the nations largest horsemeat packing plants here in Fort Worth, and they would export alot of meat to France and other places in the world where it was acceptable cuisine. Quite a few cowboys think this is just a terrible sin, but will chow down on a good steak.
This of course is no more hypocritical than me enjoying bbq chicken or pork ribs but I would never eat dog.
It's also inconceivable to me to eat rats but that's common in many places around the world, as are snakes (which I've tried).
If you look around the world, you'll find people who willingly and eagerly eat grubs, ants, frog legs (tasty), almost anything alive from the sea, rats, snakes, lizards, and whatever else is indigenous, non-toxic, and meets their nutritional needs.
The aborigines of New Guinea used to be heavily into cannibalism. We of course, consider this abominable -whereas they consider it perfectly normal.
When it comes to eating meat, people get weird, but it all comes down to where were you raised, and what kind of thinking have you put into your meat consumption.

Well, since winter's damn harsh on people in China, many of them have to eat dogs in order to stay warm and I've never heard of Chinese eating cats at all.
For the record, I'm a Chinese Malaysian but I don't eat dog and neither do most or all fellow Chinese Malaysians. I won't even if I can't stand the cold temperature at all. Really!

Hard to say. Some folks donlt like dogs or cats....I think they're just not cooking them right. LOL
But seriously,
I believe that during WWII when we were at war with Japan and both of our economies were fueling the war machine and crops as well as farm animals were raised to feed our militaries, there was a shortage of red meat readilly available for consumption by the general public. When you're hungry and have children to feed............well, you will do what you need to do.

Lots of countries eat dog. And while I'm not certain about cats, I know that restaurants in both Korea and China offer dog for consumption.
