You go try to be far from home, in some hellhole that only wants you dead, with no comforts other than your next breath.
Anything to remind you that you are real, and that there is somewhere on this Earth that isn't awash in the crap you are hip-deep in. That there are people. Beautiful, warm people that are thinking of you and counting on you to come back to them someday. That once your job is done there is something more for you to do than hurt and destroy and fear.
That's why. From time immemorial to today. That's why.

They still DO--my son in Iraq carries a pic of his GF near his heart----it helps him to feel connected to home.
