Do they make drill bits for glass?

Question

I am making some crafts using old glass soda bottles. (Old Pepsi, Crush, and Coke bottles) and I need to drill a small pencil sized hole in the thick bottom of the bottle. Do they even make drills for glass? And will the bottle crack if I try to drill?

Hi:

You can use a dremel with a diamond drill bit to drill through glass, stone and tile. If you drill slowly, you shouldn't have any problems with the glass cracking - it probably would be more prone to fractures if the area that is being drilled gets too hot so that the temperature difference with the surround glass is too much. If you go slow, it shouldn't overheat. Be sure to wear safety glasses when you do this, too.

Yes they do.
I would go to a Hobby crafting store and ask for one.

Lowes would have most anything you need.

If they don't have one, then go to a glass shop that works with making glass things. It is a diamond tip bit if I am not mistaking. There is a tool you use with it and use some water to keep from cracking the glass if you are real gentle!

You need a special drill....a jeweler uses a similar one for stones etc. they have a diamond tip and you can get them at good craft stores...a normal drill will shatter the bottle.

If you own a Dremel, they make a great glass cutting bit. If you do a lot of drilling you may need to purchase a few. They can be found at any Home Depot, Lowes, maybe even Wal-Mart. I enclosed this link so that you can see the bit. Hope this helps.

Go to a bldg. supply store (Lowes,etc.) and ask for a glass bit. We used one to drill a hole in a glass block for a craft project. You just have to go easy.

Yup. It is called a diamond cut drill bit. You can find one anyplace that sells drill bits.
