You are probably hooped. You do deserve the money back. I would check with a legal aid lawyer or take her to small debts court. Make sure if you do that you have old bills to back up your claims, reciepts of how you paid the bills and any witnesses that knew the agreement in advance of you getting the phone. If you lose you only lose a few bucks for the hearing. If you win you get a settlement and no court costs, the other person does.
If the other person fails to show up in court she is considered guilty and the decision goes to you automatically, unless she makes arrangements beforehand not to appear then, but at a later date. If you go into another agreement with another person over anything, get it in writing, terms and conditions and signed and witnessed.

Legally there might be very little you can do unless you can show via receipts or bank statements that it was you who paid the bill.
If you can do this then my advice would be take a civil suit out on her through the small claims court.
Unfortunately if you can't prove it was you who paid the bill then it will be your word against theirs and as the line was in her name and the cheque was payable to her you will stand little chance of claiming the money back
Good luck with sorting it out. Hope the thieving little cow gets whats coming to her. She certainly was no friend to you.

Small Claims Court may be your only answer, but I hope you have some way of proving you paid the bills. Otherwise, you may have to write that money off as a loss....and choose your friends a little better! When it concerns money, get it down in writing!

Take her to small claims court, if you could prove that you made the payments, the money should be returned to you.

Why did you have it in her name? You should have put it in your name in the first place, and you wouldn't have the headache of waiting and hoping she will pay you back.
