first, read everthing you can find about them. Hang out with others who know things, take auto shop in school, get a service manual for your car, and follow the step by step directions, go to automotive school, get a part time job in a garage, ask lot's of questions.

Here's how I did it. First, I built model cars from the time I was maybe 10. I knew all the names of the parts just by putting the models together. Then, I helped my dad work on his cars, changing spark plugs, alternators, batteries, wires, water pumps, fan belts, all the relatively simple things. When I could drive and I had dad's old truck, I did things like oil changes, changing tires, installing stereos, replacing radiators, brakes, head gaskets, carburetors, distributors, that kind of thing. Along with all that, I read everything I can about cars, from magazines to books, and now on-line. If your high school has auto shop, take it. I did. You're going to find answers here from guys like Dodge Man, and the more you study and work on cars yourself, the more you will realize that guys like Dodge Man are full of crap. I can honestly say that almost everything I know about cars has been learned on my own through both reading and hands-on experience. Cheap and tunable means probably an older car, because nowadays cars are controlled by computers, and their systems are very difficult to modify without spending a lot of money.

Think about what you know alot of, is it video games, sports? How did you learn about those things. It's the same with cars. Watch shows, read magazines, books, go with your mom/dad when they are taking the car for repairs, maintenance, and observe, ask and learn. Honda Civic seems to be the one of the best "first cars". They are fun to drive and really customizable, and really cheap.
Tips: Respect cars, they are dream machines, but they break down if you abuse them and don't take care of them.
Do not become a statistic, drive the speed limit. But who says you can't try your 0-60 on an on ramp to a freeway (that's really fun)

When I was your age or a little younger, I loved working on cars however my dad worked at Ford motor co and That excited me and when I turned 13 When ever he worked on his car or someone else I was there asking what are you doing what is the name of that tool and where did it come from you know what kids do so when I turned 16 and needed some advice he would explain what to do and sometimes he would help me, Now I am retired from ford motor co and have learned a lot but I owe it to my Dad for his help and encouragement and wisdom , That is how I got started.

I learned everything I know at school and by working on cars. Reading books will only get you so far. For your first car, get a 240sx or an eclipse or talon (1st generation, all wheel drive, manual)...... fun cars and good to learn on. assuming you like jap cars of course..... DO NOT GET A CIVIC!!!!!!! be a little different..... plus you'll have a car with more than 80 bhp.

When you decide to get a job, try to get on at a garage cleaning up the bays. Thats the best way to get a feel for mechanicing. That could lead to an apprenticeship while you go to a tech school to get formal training. But the number one thing is that you have to have a certain natural mechanical ability. Sounds like you may have it.
