Daisymae, I still have only one bathroom, which is one more than we had as kids. Then it was a tin bath on the wall that was dragged in on Sunday evening, filled with kettles and pans of hot water so we were all fresh for school on Monday.
Our loo was down the garden and you had to use a torch to find your way. In the winter the water was frozen up and couldn't be flushed some mornings.
So believe it or not I'm very grateful for a bathroom at all!
Good question though, you are so good at springing my memory banks into life again. lol x

I've thought about that before. We only had one growing up, and when we went to visit grandma and grandpa, the privy was up the back (and it was scary going out there after dark with a weak flashlight or a candle, and for my money a Sears catalog page is way to slick to do the job, you know what I mean?) and the shower was an old water tank just a tad closer than the privy with a rectangle cut out for a door and a water hose with icy cold water.
Every day I think of people all over the world with no clean, running water (would you like to live in Bagdad right now?) much less hot water on demand. No plumbing, no sanitation - is this so different from how we lived way back when? Not really - but most of us didn't have bombs going off at night or suicide bombers at the produce market. Makes me sad.

Now everyone in the family takes one or two showers a day and women put on make up in the morning because they go to work. In the old days (like 40 years ago) people took one bath a week and women stayed at home and got up one hour before everybody else, so the bathrom was free.
Do you miss those days? I don't. Let's have a cheer for the 2 or 3 bathroom home!

I know? your right did we learn to hold it longer? I mean what's up now each person has to have their own bathroom.
It can't just be a tub and sink anymore it has to have flashing lights and candles. Fancy wall paper with bows. Double sinks. While staying in an motel on a trip we took I noticed something very inlightening. The sink isn't in the room with the tub & shower combo just a tiolet. So while he was shaving and doing this thing I could use the shower.
then when he got the bathroom I could still put on my makeup.
I am now a firm believer that sinks should not be in the bathroom. But since we have two bathrooms so that isn't a problem but for people who have kids or have one bathroom?

Bathroom?
We had an outhouse/storage shed with TWO stalls--one accessible from the inside, which was protected from the cold north wind in the winter--and which was generally designated as the "female" stall. The other was accessible from the outside, directly facing north (poor buggers) and was designated the "male" stall. My parents were very good at putting enzymes and lime down in the hole so that there was no permeating smell, and the stalls were kept scrupulously clean.
We got our first indoor bathroom when I was 12. And since there were 5 kids in the house with my two parents at the time, they figured they'd make it easy on all of us, and added a second bathroom in the newly constructed half storey upstairs to help with the load.
So I guess I was one of the lucky ones who always had TWO bathrooms. (Outdoors and In.)

When I was a kid - the bathroom was for #1, #2 and taking a shower. My mom was a stay at home mom so she didn't have to spend hours getting ready. My dad took his showers before bed and left for work before any of us were up.
No one had a beauty regimen that required an hour or more of bathroom time.

And even worse, there were two girls in our family. My mother got the bathroom late at night. My dad got the bathroom very early in the morning. The rest of the time, it was a battleground between my sister and me.

Wow, I bet you don't enjoy camping much then if you think one bathroom is "roughing it". The majority of the homes in my area have one bathroom and I have never felt impoverished in any way because of it or as if I lived in a poor area.

We had nine in our family, Mom & Dad, me and my six brothers. We only had one bathroom and we had to make do.
In fact it was the only one with the lock. And when my brothers used to try (notice I said try, I was tough, had to be with six younger brothers) they used to run in the bathroom, as it was the only door that had a lock on it.
Oh yeh, getting ready for school was fun.

Until I was 12 the bath was on the back porch (summer) or in the kitchen (winter). The toilet at the end of the path was a gift from the WPA. Thanks to President Hoover
