Beauty and the beast, Pinnocchio, wizard of oz, alladin and rumpelstiltskin are my favourites. Don't know why i liked them but there was something mystical, magical about it that one can only imagine and they were touching. It takes u to the dream world and u are completely lost in it.

I used to devour the classic Greek myths as a child. I think my first love was The Odyssey by Homer and it probably still is. Though Ovid's the Metamorphosis is pretty spectacular in it's own way. A bit dense for youngin's, but still. Maybe it was an early exposure to "Clash of the Titans," but I always just loved the stories of the gods and heroes.
It's my opinion if you want your child to grow up with a really great imagination and a love of reading and limitless curiosity, you should buy a copy of Thomas Bulfinch's, "The Age of Fable," and a good dictionary when you go shopping for blankies and stuffed animals. Maybe pick up some illustrated versions and then when they finally get to reading on their own you'll be surprised how quiet and involved they can be in those stories.
Here's a couple of great quotes by the author from Bartleby.com:
"Without a knowledge of mythology much of the elegant literature of our own language cannot be understood and appreciated."
"For Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness."

Actually, I found fairy stories quite scary!
I liked Cinderella though; it had a nice happy ending. i liked the idea that someone who had a poor beginning could Get The Guy!
My other favourite was The Princess and the Pea; I could imagine the real Princess sleeping on all these mattresses and still being able to feel the pea underneath them all!

Probably Billy Goat Gruff. I was deliciously scared of the troll beneath the bridge. Fairy tales certainly are morbidly hideous, huh?

I loved my grannys version of thumbelina
she would tell the story and then tell how thumbelina married
the flower prince. and they lived happily ever after in a house made of flowers just like those in her garden. then we would go outside and make flower houses out of flowers and weeds etc. I was told years later by a lauging relative it was her sneaky way of getting someone else to do all the garden work pulling the weeds and trimming the rose
bushes etc. But hey its still a great memory.

The story told to me about Jesus and the bread and fish.
I liked it as a small child and can still remember what the illustration in the book looked like. It used to make me hungry!
Today, with all the hungry people in this world, NOW would be a good time for this to happen again.
