I spent 10 years in USMC and I can say no one ever forced me to enlist.
Those who join up have a greater sense of purpose and a greater respect for freedom.
Self-loathing liberals that whine and complain about the war do nothing positive for this nation.
People need to stop being brainwashed by the liberal media, and wake up to the fact that radical Islam has been at war with us since the 1970's (remember the Iran hostage situation that Carter did nothing about).
It took an act of terror on our own soil before people woke up and patriotism spread. We are fighting a war that we have been victim of for over 30 years. This war must be fought and it must be won. Failure to do so will deem future generations to more attacks of hate by Islamic extremists around the world.
No one "sends their kids to die," but loss of life in war time is a simple fact of war. You don't have to like it, but you do owe these brave men and women, who fight in our stead, some respect and support.
FREEDOM is not free

Absolutely! You have medical and other great bennies. Including education both in and out of the service. AND nearly every place I eat or shop has some sort of military discount! All after just 20 years. It flew by for me. I have co-pays for meds like $3 to $9 bucks. My retirement makes a little more than the house payment. Which I would not have been able to get the very nice place without the VA backed mortgage. The fun places my family and I were able to see on the Governments travel money when I was reassigned. With my background in surface and air transportation plus the hazardous certifications I can work in any shipping company including air cargo and the railway. I can also work at civilian and military airports. I qualified for the Transportation Security Administration as an officer due to my background as a superintendent of 2 Air Force air terminals. After watching the military like political crap I decided to take the easy way because I could. I work as a grocery store manager in my town. Why? Because I can. I spend the extra money on fishing. Plus I have so many friends that look for me when they shop.

No, I never asked anyone to join the military. We've been in this war for more than 4 years now so everyone over there fighting has either joined or reenlisted since the war started. They know there are risks involved.

It is a personal decision, but I'm not sure I consider an 18 year old an adult.. Legally yes..but not intellectually. I joined the service at 17 after Beruit got bombed (no regrets), but I don't recall being old enough to drink and barely old enough to drive.

Actually, Joining the military and defending your country (whatever country you live in) should be a part of being free. I was sorry to see them stop the draft. It left all the punks and losers to join gangs, cause crime and overload the justice system. My family have all served in the military as far back as I can find. I'm proud to have served, I'm proud of my brothers who served too. As I am of all my family who did. How can you stand up and talk about freedom, if you are not willing to fight for it? You, like so many others have forgotten the sacrifices made by our ancestors to give us the freedoms we have today. That saddens me.

I don't think so. Joining the military should be a personal decision.

Yes, when an 18 year old kid who has no options because the Republicans have done everything possible to eliminate the jobs he could do in America "decides" to join the army, that's his personal freedom of choice. Oh, and when the government takes taxes out of your paycheck and sends that money to Iraq to pay for the war, instead of fixing bridges and overflowing sewers in the USA, that's everyone's personal choice too.

I never asked, and when I was in, no one ever asked me. I knew that it was a possibility when I signed my name on the dotted line. My advice, make sure you fully understand the risks before you committ to anything. Because once you're there, ain't no turning back.

No.
But I do ask people that SAY that they support the wars why they aren't putting their money where their mouth is and fighting for what they claim to believe in.
