You shouldn't. Hygiene is the responsibility of the parents, unless it is causing a problem for the other children at school. In that case, the child should be sent home until s/he & the parent(s) resolve the issue.

I honestly think a lot of what you need to teach comes through observations in the everyday school environment. You don't need to teach the class not to pick their nose in public if none of the students are doing it, but you CAN tell a kid not to do it when you see it happen.

As far as basic skills I think all kids should know, brushing your teeth, washing your hands, and not sharing food and drinks are the biggies. The latter two are beneficial for everyone since they help prevent the spread of germs.

I agree w/the first poster, that parents should be the ones teaching this stuff. Unfortunately, not all parents think this way, and their children shouldn't have to suffer as a result.

Your best bet is to check with your state's health curriculum to see what is deemed appropriate to teach.

hand washing is paramount. Not putting anything on the ground in your mouth. Not sharing drinks, or hair brushes, not eating dirt or bugs to show off. Not peeing in yard. Not sharing food with animals. Keeping your hands off your privates constantly (young boys) not playing in toliet. use kleenex to blow,

There are two things that need to be taught from an early age:
The first is basic brushing of the teeth. that'll last them a life-time and they will thank you for it.
Second is to always flush the toilet and then wash their hands.
Again it'll last a life-time and everyone else will thank you for it
