foxes scream really loudly to shock their prey. I heard one for years and thought it was a child getting murdered or something until someone told me what it was. It could have been a fox.

Youtube has some audio of a fox screaming.

Everyone who has answered previously could be correct. However, I have to tell you a true story. First I live in the Catskills of Upstate New York. I was outside a few summers ago, and heard what sounded, at first like young children playing. Since I live in a rural area and my nearest neighbor is about a half mile away, I thought it prudent to investigate. As I got closer to the sound it began to sound more and more like a goat, but it sounded in distress. Anyway, about a 1/4 mile from my house is a pond and a dog had chased a newborn deer into the water. It was floundering in the water trying to keep its head above the surface. I chased the dog and jumped into the water and cradled the baby deer and brought it to the shore. I did not see it's mother anywhere. Anyway, once the deer was safely on the shore I shooed it away, with the intention of watching to see if it's mother came and got him. The deer would not leave, and followed me for a 1/4 mile back to my house. He stayed in my back yard at the foot of the stairs to my deck for about two hours. I think he would have come right up to the back door if it could have got up the steps. Finally, the baby deer left and headed for the woods. I followed and searched for it and found it lying in high grass right on the edge of my property. Once I knew where it was, I continued watching it, but from a distance. About an hour after that, the mother and another fawn did return and the three took off through the woods.

I felt good!!!!!

But my point is that a baby deer can make quite a noise, especially if separated from it's mother.
