Turtles like privacy anyway, they should always have a place to hide. They're shy animals in general. You should definitely give her a little place to hide. You should handle her more often. You didn't say how long ago she had been attacked.. if it was recently you will have to give her a lot of her own time to deal with her fears. Shes been traumatized. Good luck. :)

Ok, if you found the box turtle, how long have you had her? Is she in a very large enclosure? Does she have a basking lamp with a temp of about 95 degrees at one end? Is it measured with a digital thermometer? Is there a UVB bulb within 12 inches of the basking spot on for 12 hours a day? Is she offered a varitey of plant and protein foods daily? Does she have a small pool that she can easily get in and out of? All of these and more are important to box turtle health. See this link for more details:

Fix an area where she(?) has access to water and fresh food - veggies. Place her in a room where there is little activity and just leave her alone and she will come out. As she grows to feel safe and comfortable she will come out more often. When my children were young we had one that would come up and stand by your feet to be petted. She loved to be petted on the back of her head and would just move her head in a rhythmic manner while you petted her.

the box turtle is VERY Stressed and it needs time to recover to make it less stress dont pick it up , touch it , give it LOADS of room.

about the bitten shell it would grow back.. but i would see a vet anyways

unless there is a lack in calcium the turtle is safe. being alert is natural maybe you should build more hiding spots for it so it feels safer. He will be back to normal in a matter of months (sadly) ,it happens.

If this was a wild caught turtle, release it so it can de-stress and heal.

Otherwise, make sure it has the right cares and diet, and leave it alone. Try http://www.boxturtlesite.info for ideas.

well no wonder she is afraid if a dog bit her shell. the only thing you can do is handle it a lot so it becomes more comfortable with things again

Some turtles are very shy.
Handling it will only make it worse.
