Birds and bees - um - OK !! Snails and slugs have both boy and girl parts - and - they use them all, all at the same time !! Kind of a 69-69, 69-96 or 96-96 thing going on - weird............'slug4life' - look a little closer and you're going to see a lot of "extra" and "unexplained" hugg'n, n' kiss'n, n' bump'n, n' such going on!! I too am a biologist, with a sense of humor and a pair of albino apple snails. RScott

R scott got it only partly right... yes they are hermaphrodites (have both testis and ovaries) but they cannot fertilize themselves.... if you ever look at a snail/slug on their body, near their shell, they have a hole in their neck- that they breathe with... When they mate, they line up these holes and then they inject each other with a "love dart"... this is a long tube that goes into the other snail and delivers sperm to the snails ovary. (they do this to each other) After the sperm has been delivered, the snails disconnect and when conditions are right, they will lay their eggs.
