I just received a quote from a bathtub linning company. When I asked for identification such as the permit to do the work the sale rep said it wasn't required. I'm thinking this just can't be possible what are your thoughts on this?

They may not need a contractors license but they should have a business license on the wall at the business.

There are huge pitfalls to hiring an unlicensed contractor. Usually they're not bonded or insured, and if they or their employee gets injured on the job, they could sue for medical bills.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are hiring a contractor: * Hire only licensed contractors, and check with your local licensing board to ensure they are licensed. * Get three references and always review past work * Get at least three different bids * Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms * Don't let payments get ahead of the work. Keep a record of all payments. * Don't make a final payment until you are satisfied with the job * Don't pay cash * Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project

there are alot of bad contractors out there, so I would be very careful, but I am not sure if a work permit would be needed for a bathtub liner, but I would ask for identification on the installer and ask if he is bonded and check the bbb site.

Always get at least 3 quotes.

They need a license, but as you are not remodeling or putting a new tub in you do not need a permit.

I think your gut is telling you not to do it - so don't. Go to bathfitters.com. They are nationally recognized and most likely won't scam you.
