Put the plunger over the hole in the bowl & push up & down hard & fast a few times. You know it is clear when the toilet is flushed & the water swirls around the bowl, rises & goes down.

As a safety precaution, take the lid off the tank & if the water starts to overflow the bowl, lift the rod with the ball on it or reach inside the tank & push the flapper down (black & in the middle of the tank).

May have to plunge it (push it rapidly) a few times. Be aware that if there is something in the toilet that cannot make it through the throat of the toilet (Q tip, small comb etc - something small that was accidently dropped in the toilet that floats around) it may cause intermittent overflow & an auger may be needed.

Here's the technique I use, and it works on the first try the majority of the time.

Get the bowl nearly full of water (if it's not already), then seat the plunger into the hole at the bottom of the hole. Begin a rapid pumping motion while maintaining contact between the rim of the plunger and the toilet. You only need to pump for about 10 seconds, then pull the plunger out of the way.

The idea is to create a vacuum behind the plunger. When you pull the plunger out of the way, a wall of water is going to rush down and hit whatever is blocking the pipe...hopefully forcing it far enough that it connects to a bigger pipe under the house and keeps going.

This technique usually works on the first try, but you may occasionally have to repeat it. Best of luck!

Usually when you unclog a toilet most of the water in the bowl will be gone You can almost hear it let go. The plunging action I use is up (try to create a suction) and then down holding the plunger tight to the bowl at all times .A trial flush is usually the way I tell its OK be ready to stop the water when you try, have the tank top off and just push the flapper down to stop the water to the bowl.

HERE IS A NEW WAY !!! You don't use a plunger you take the bag out of the plastic waste basket fill it with water and hold it about wast high. Start to pour being careful not to splash out side the rim and not over flowing the toilet. You should empty the bucket in about 15 seconds. In most cases it only takes one basket full

Use a toilet plunger. It's the type that looks like a funnel on the end. Slowly push it down into the bowl. Bring it back up about half way and slowly push it down again. Then quickly pull it upwards. What you want to do is create a vacuum and pull (not push) any clog back into the bowl. Pushing a clog further into the drainline may cause you to be calling a plumber to auger the lines out.
