I bought a 15' runabout tri hull with a bracket mounted on the back for a troll motor. Is a transom mounted troll motor "old school" technology? How do you determine what lb. of thrust you need? I looked on the box at the store. But, that is not a question it gives the answer to.

go to a boat dealer and visit ''parts'' and talk to the counter-man and show a picture of your boat and get the right help and advice ==== the front mounted troll-mtr tends to pull the boat in the direction that you want -- rear mount motor will push and the wind catches the front of the boat and blows the bow around and you loose the desired direction and the big fish ... the tri-hull was not designed as a fishing boat but since that's what you got and it is a multi-use rig --be happy that you can ride, fish, ski and enjoy .....

OK, what are you fishing for. It matters. If you really want a slow trolling motor for working a lure through deep walleye holes then transom mount is fine, in fact ideal.
If you are looking for a manouvering motor for casting to Bass fish around weed beds you likely would prefer a bow mount with the foot pedal controls.
If you are going to buy the motor see if it will fit on the stern bracket and if it is cheap enough buy it with the bow bracket included. Then you can do whatever you like.

Hello, do you want a 12 volt or 24 volt trolling motor? A 12 will be less powerful but you only have to have one battery you will want a minumum of 55# thrust for your boat. If you want to be able to use it while you fish you will want a bow mount will be better because you control it with your foot that way you don't have to put down your pole every time you move. You will also need to know what length shaft you need.

A bow mount gives you more control if u have room for it.A rear only pushes the boat? Most any size will push the boat it's how much battery & how fast you want to go & how much you to spend 12 volt only.

in case you're talkin bout electric powered "trolling automobiles," no one somewhat makes use of 'em for trolling (a minimum of no longer in this area of the rustic), there extra for positioning the boat on an identical time as casting; we use the outboard for trolling in any different case in case you somewhat troll plenty, or in the adventure that your substantial engine won't pass sluggish adequate, you're able to upload a smaller outboard to the transom. notwithstanding it somewhat is in accordance on your fishing style...in case you have a casting deck interior the bow, you opt for the trolling motor up there the place you are able to administration it. and it somewhat is way less demanding to regulate the boat while the motor's pulling it by the water.
