2/5 (two over five) - y/ y - 2 (y over y minus two). I thought i had it, but the answer was wrong.

2/5 - y/(y-2) can't be solved or further simplified. Does it equal something in the original problem?

Or did you mean equals instead of minus?

2/5 = y/(y-2)

If so, cross-multiply:

2(y-2) = 5y
2y - 4 = 5y
-4 = 3y
-4/3 = y

You have to solve for 'y'.. So here ill go threw this step by step.

2/5 - (y/(y-2)) = 0

It seems like a fraction doesnt it? And what do you remember about fractions? That you need a common denominator to do anything.

So now, by looking at the denominators of 2/5 and y/(y-2) what are they? Well, for 2/5 it's 5 and y/(y-2) is (y-2)
2...................y
--- (minus) -----
5.................(y-2)

so what is missing from the denominator of 2/5 and of y/(y-2) ? Remember we have to make them the SAME denominator
We need to make BOTH denominators equal 5(y-2).. that's why i asked 'what is missing?'

2/5 is missing (y-2).. because if i multiply.. 5 * (y-2) is 5(y-2)
and y/(y-2) is missing 5, because if I multiply (y-2)*5, i get 5(y-2)

But remember, when i adjust a fraction to be 'proportional' to another fraction, i must multiply both the top and the bottom.

so ...2/5 becomes... 2/5 * (y-2)/(y-2) = 2 (y-2)/5(y-2)

and (y/(y-2)) becomes y/(y-2)) * 5/5 = 5y/(5(y-2))

We must then rewrite the 'changed' fractions

So your original equation: (2/5) - (y/(y-2)) becomes...

2(y-2)/5(y-2) - 5y/(5(y-2))

once we have this we can 'eliminate the denominator'.. so we have. 2(y-2) - 5y.

2(y-2) becomes --> 2y-4
5y stays the same (nothing to FOIL)

so ... 2y-4 - 5y = 0
add 4 to both sides

2y - 5y = 4

-3y = 4

y = -4/3

You cant answer this question because you dont know what y is.

If y is 0 then the answer is different than if it is anything but 0. The reason is that 0/0 = 0. If y is anything other than 0 then y/y = 1.

There must be a equation to solve.so im giving two solutons.
Solvingfor y as a eq.
2/5=y/(y-2)
cross multiply.
2(y-2)=5y
open brackets,
2y-4=5y
2y-5y=4
-3y=4
y= -4/3

now solving it as you have written it
2/5-y/(y-2)
taking l.c.m
[2(y-2)-5y]/5(y-2)
=[2y-4-5y]/5y-10
=(-3y-4)/(5y-10)
you cannot simplify it further.

2/5-y/(y-2
=2y-4-5y /5(y-2)
=-3y-4/5(y-2).
=- (3y+4)/5(y-2)ANS.
