One cannot possibly describe the feeling once you get there! There are no words to describe it. Either you love it or not, either way you have to respect the fact that thousands or years ago the incas built that empire without modern machinery. For me, it's undescribable the feeling of waking up and sitting down there while watching the sunrise. You pay a lot of money to stay there (Sanctuary lodge) but it was worth every penny.

MP was the first exotic destination I recall wanting to visit, though it was many years before I got there.

I hiked the Inca Trail, so my first view was a dramatic one; from above, not from the touristy front gate. I love the solidity of the architecture and the beauty of the scenery. I suppose the natives must have been accustomed to the surrounding mountains and the river below, but there are amazing views from almost every corner of the site.

I stayed after our half-day tour was over and the trainloads of day-tourists left, so I was able to wander the site on my own as the shadows lengthened and the llamas grazed at peace (instead of posing for photographs).

I wouldn't want to have lived in Inca society, but visiting sites like MP gives an understanding of what humans are capable of achieving; it gives us a glimpse at different ways of thinking, but reminds us that some values, like the appreciation for great scenery, are apparently universal!

I thought it was a ripp off. It is nice to see. You get respect for the people who lived there many years ago, but ... when they found it, it was all rocks what you see is largely an impression of how it could have been. There seems to be no written/drawing of how it would have looked. It was awefully expensive to get there and on the site there was no explanation at all. That was weird. Either you walk on your own with a guide book or you take a guide telling you how the historians think it would have been. For me it defenitely was not the highlight of the south american trip (which wasn't just a quick one. We spent 1,5y wandering through Central and South America).
