My boyfriends elderly aunt has been cheated out of three homes and thousands of dollars by distant relatives who she thought cared for her. (they hung around her all the time until they got what they wnated_). At this point I don't know if she h;as any money left at all and she is getting more and more senile every day. What can we do to help her? (Her grandchildren adn sister probably won't have anything to inherit at this rate. I am also afraid that after they use her up they may wind up puting her in an old folks home, when actually she had enough money and property to be cared for at home for the rest of her life.

This is financial elder abuse and happens quite often, though many times, it's not reported and the elder has nothing left to care for their needs.

I agree with the above answers. Your boyfriend's Aunt needs a conservator if she is this far gone with dementia.

Do this: Go to the Yellow Pages and find an Elder Attorney. They are prepared for this type of situation. Explain everything to this Attorney and get a conservatorship started. This is imperative because those who would continue to drain her of her money and possessions are stopped in their tracks by Court Order. There is the possibility that some of it may be recovered, but the Attorney will handle what can be done about that. The Attorney will handle any reports to authorities as he/she is an Officer of the Court.

This is a sad commentary on what happens in our society today, but it is not new and as long as it is allowed to continue, we all are in danger of it happening to us.

The first thing I would do is contact an attorney who can help.

Does she know this is going on? If so and she trusts you have her set up new bank accounts that the other pople do not have access to.
