Have you never seen Stephen Kings "IT"?

On top of that they smile a lot while masked behind a big red nose and white makeup. Oh yeah...because they're men that wear makeup. The reason their smiles are creepy is because they give off the face like they want something from you or they're out to get you.

There have been some creations which displayed the darker side of clowns. Stephen King's IT is well know for its clown demon/monster.

There were some films also showing the dark or weird side of clowns. There was a film called Killer Clowns from Outer Space, released in 1988. There is even a film called Fear of Clowns (2004), starring Mark Lassize as Shivers the Clown.

Then there was the serial killer named John Wayne Gacy, who lived in a suburb of Chicago.

Finally, I know how some people, even some of the moderators or professional bloggers who work for Yahoo hate Wikipedia, but really, someone has put together a rather interesting article and bibliography. I've entered the the link below, AFTER two others which speak more directly to how to address the problem.

I can't stand clowns. They're freaky and fake.
We hate them because they're hiding behind a costume. I don't trust anyone who has a costume on. We don't know who they are.

Anyone who has ever been victimized as a child, by an adult, will naturally be more cautious than someone who has not.

Pedophiles like to dress up as clowns. Remember John Wayne Gacy?
It's not an unrealistic fear for anyone who was abused by a clown as a child.

I was abused by someone wearing a Santa Claus outfit when I was a very young child.
Now. . . every time I see santa, I want to shoot him in the face.

Sometimes abuse happens to children & they don't remember it. They feel afraid of something and don't know why. Something may have happened to them when they were babies.

I personally wonder the same thing too. I seen the movie It and all the other clown horror movies, but I do not hate clowns, I actually love them! I mean movies are not real so I don't know why people think TV stuff are real. Anyways, I think people are scare of the make up or the fact they don't know who is behind the face, but most of the clowns I know are my friends, so I know who is behind the face.

Well, i belive it;s diffrent reasons for diffrent humans. I dislike clowns my self. I don't know why i think i was just born that way, becuse i have never been to a canavel or anything with clowns and when i watched IT for the first time i thought it was entertaining and funny some becuse all i saw was Tim Currys' face. So really, i think to answer your question, There would have to be a ton of research. Sorry i can't answer your question but theres my cents

I think it's because of the makeup. Their makeup makes their features look distorted. That can be unnerving for a little kid. If your frightened by a clown as a child it could carry over into adulthood. Some people just have phobias.

Well some of them do the make up all wrong and they look like someone terrifying, it's all in the art of make up. I remember when seeing santa entering the house at christmas time when I was a kid, I screamed the whole street down lol~to me he was not santa but an intruder ( room was dark) with a long white beard with a hump on one side of his back ( that was his sack :o) . I was just a kid, how was I suppose to know hehe.

I too have always been somewhat afraid of clowns...perhaps as 'dedeskinner' commented, it could be the make-up - as if the person is somehow 'masking' themselves of what they may truly be (?) And yet, when I think of people like Red Skelton acting as a clown, I can't help but laugh and be entertained - maybe because I/we have see what he really looks like (a pleasant face and person)

everybody is afraid of something. It is hard to say what triggers a fear.

I hate balloons and was afraid of them as a kid. I know now that it is the stress and anticipation of knowing that they will burst. Completely irrational but If I can avoid them I do.

I have a buddy who is afraid of fans. He is convinced the blade will spin off and chop his hand off. He knows it is irrational still they make him nervous.

I worked with a woman who was afraid of tunnels. And my ex-wife will not drive across the Verennzo Bridge in New York it is the only place she is afraid of heights. no other bridges just that one.

Hmm.. good question. Well people connect clowns and carnivals, and the carnival music really creeps me out, and so do carnies...the people who travel with the circus. People may also be afraid because movies like "IT" bye Steven king. Where the clown has huge scary teeth and kills everyone. lol well good luck. :)
