Look people, it's not hard to get high horsepower and pretty good mileage.. All has to do with VE %, and BSFC.

Compression is the #1 thing.. High compression gives more torque and better VE

#2 is camming the engine just right.. Most folks will run a BIG cam and bleed off all the cyl pressure..

#3 is tuning.. Get the timing and carb dailed in right for your combo.

#4 is gear ratios.

I have a camaro that runs 11.40's @ 118 in the 1/4 mile.. 10.18:1 355 with 212 to 218 psi cyl pressure, th-400 trans, 2800 stall, 3.42 gears..

Gets avg. of 14-15 MPG.. On the highway I get 18-19... Pure city, stop and go, playing with the throttle 12-13 mpg

You have to build the engine to make the most torque in the RPM band that you drive in, then make sure it's geared to keep you in that RPM range.

you need to think 2-barrel carburetor .. if you are dead set to race then you should forget trying to save gas and concentrate on the high dollar engine parts that will hold up in big rpm's and fast starts --- you will never have it all and there is always someone that has a faster car than you ... that is not meant to deflate your tires (or ego) ----- it is a fact.. find a good mechanic and talk to him and get some solid advice about the type of perf. you want from a 350 and what you are going to run it in... then ask about saving gas.... (((( as far as it goes there is no such thing as`performance and ''''low gas mileage'''' _____________

I don't mean to sound rude, but are you stupid? A 350 is a large 8 cylinder engine. It will never get good fuel mileage. You have to pick your poison. If performance is what you want, then the 350 is a good motor. If you want good gas mileage, you need a smaller motor like a 4 cylinder, which, in turn, will not be a very high performance engine.

finding on what you opt for to get out of your engine. you're saying you will re-build the engine, i'd wait until ultimately then. Octane boosters reason engines to run slightly warmer. Even after rebuilding the engine i does no longer advance the octane too lots. The ninety two octane provided on the pump isn't too undesirable as long because it has no longer been interior the tank too long. Timing would properly be a controversy in case you attempt to extend the octane too lots. the biggest difficulty you will run into is the consistency of the gasoline you get on the pump. In lab try it incredibly is been desperate the unleaded gasoline starts to interrupt down approximately 2 weeks after refinement. The greater that it incredibly is uncovered to atmospheric situations the swifter it incredibly is going to start to interrupt down for this reason loosing it incredibly is octane grade. I even have discovered that it incredibly is confusing song an engine for a particular octane. in actuality increasing the grade slightly via making use of products like 104+ tend to tutor solid overall performance. something greater and you start to spend too lots time below your hood than in the back of the wheel.

you can have fair mileage from a 350 or high performance but not both, decide which is most important to you and go for it.

take the heads from a 305 and put them on the 350 it will increase the compression giving you more torque and horsepower without lowering the mileage. cheers.

there's so many combinations of things that you can do to that engine ,that there's no end to it,with a small block Chevy the sky is the limit, literally ,you can spend up to 20 k on it if you want to ,the more you spend, the more performance you get from it,good luck on it.
