I reinstalled windows to get rid of a virus and a ton of crap on my computer but now the speakers dont work. I have tried the windows troubleshooter but it did not help except to show me that i have no sound device. Do I need a new driver? or something else? I dont know much about speakers though I'm not so bad with computers.

My recommendation would be to go to the device manager and uninstall the drivers, restart your computer and let windows reinstall the drivers. To get to the device manager,

Right Click "My Computer" icon

Select "properties"

Select "Hardware" tab

then select the "Device Manager" button

Then when in the device manager, find the "sound, video, and game controllers" section

There you should find the sound card. If something is corrupted or you don't have the correct drivers, it will look like there is a yellow ?. Even you don't see that, just right cick the audio device and select "uninstall"

Then restart your computer and window should automatically detect the device and walk you through the install process via a wizard.

Go to control panel and click on Sounds and Audio Devices.
Then click on the Audio tab.
Then see if your card is highlited and listed in the dropdown box. And not some modem or other device.
If not listed you will need to reinstall the device drivers for your soundcard.

go to start and open run, then type
devmgmt.msc
and click ok, scroll down to sound video and game controller and open the submenu. Look for anything with a yellow triangle. If there is one double click on it, (will open a new window) and select either "update driver" or "roll back driver" (if roll back is availiable I would use that.)

You need to go to your computer manufacturers support website - download and drivers section - and download and install the audio drivers for your computers model.

This will fix your problem.
