many people say different ways
i feel is
Ranathunga is a pillar of the srilankan team & was a captain for winning the 1996 world cup....
Jaysuriya for scoring plenty of centuries when he was a captain & even now doing his duty well...
Attapatu for test matches...
but for me mahle jayawerdana is the best i simply love his style of playing, the way he sets the fielders & setting the bowling & batting orders & his way of thinking is superb! he brought srilankan cricket team from a bad position up with his own effort... he is one of the main reason why today srilanka is on the top in cricket... so there r many good things to tel like that about him...
so my choice would be

Without a slightest of doubt Arujuna Ranatunga is the best captain the Sri Lankan cricket had so far.

Ranatunga.
Before his leadership the SL cricket team were generally regarded as a joke. After his 10+ years of captaincy they are major players in both Test and One-Day cricket.
He wasn't the greatest batsman but his strategy, tactics and motivational skills were second to none. Remember the 1998 Oval Test match - 98% of cricket world thought it was insane to win the toss and bowl first.
He also stood up for his country against all opponents especially the all-conquering Australians.
Sri Lanka is now a well respected Test Playing nation, that certainly wasn't the case before his leadership.

well the most successfull so far has been Ranatunga with Jayasuriya not too far behind.But let's not forget that Jayawardane has been captain for a short period of tym.if he stays as captain for longer he might become the best captain in da world! lets also not forget that mahela has performed with the bat as captain better than ranatunga
