I don't believe your story. Where did you "travel the streets and mingle with locals"? Mexico? Maybe in the Southwest U.S. you'd get that reaction. But not many other places. The Cowboys do have a storied past. But let's face it. They haven't done dick in well over a decade. A new generation of football fans is growing up not having remembered the last time the Cowboys even won a playoff game. And the Cowboys only have ONE NFC East title in the last 13 years. I don't think of any team as "America's Team". But if I had to pick one franchise that epitomized the culture of American football with its winning tradition, legendary players and coaches and national following, it would be none other than the Green Bay Packers. Even the Pittsburgh Steelers have more claim to the mythical title of being "America's Team" than the Cowboys and their $1.2 billion dollar stadium do. The Cowboys represent everything wrong with the NFL. All glitz, glamour, and big money. Hell, the average fan on the average salary couldn't afford to attend a Cowboys game in person. I hope it's another 13 years before Dallas wins a playoff game, and Jerry is staring at a half empty stadium on Sundays because ticket prices are too high.

Everyone has some great ideas, but there is only one true reason and it goes back to Texas "Tex" Earnest Schramm, Jr. He was the original president and general manager of the Cowboys, and he is the person who marketed the team as "America's Team." These things always start within an organization.
Michael Jackson proclaimed himself the King of Pop and the title stuck.
Howard Stern proclaimed himself the King of All Media and the title stuck.
Tex Schramm proclaimed the Cowboys America's Team and the title stuck.
However, I will say that there are Dallas Cowboy fans all over the United States. No matter what stadium the Cowboys are playing in the crowd is filled with their fans.
Over the years when asked why Texas Stadium has a hole in the roof, the Cowboys organization came out with the statement, "So God can watch his team."
Whatever you think about the Cowboys, they have always been masters at marketing their team.

Every "America's Team" in sports is called such because they win a lot in a short period of time and acquire a loyal following of bandwagon fans around the country. True fans cheer for their home team I imagine, but there are many that just like to say they're a fan of the winning team so they cheer for whoever that is at the time despite having no connection with the team whatsoever. Also there have been a lot of star players on the Cowboys (no pun intended) and many fans just cheer for the superstars.
Other examples include the Yankees, Lakers, and Notre Dame football but many Notre Dame fans like them just because they are Catholic.
I hate the Cowboys too but I wish they would still play the Lions every year on Thanksgiving instead of the NFL giving in to complaints and now letting everyone play on Thanksgiving. What ever happened to tradition?

Man i hated that words America Team, the Dallas Cowboys hasn't earned that words since their last Super Bowl win. How you get to have that words attach to your team if your team haven't win a Super Bowl. The New England Patriots is the real Americas Team, they won 3 of the last 4 Super Bowl played. So the Cowboys don't deserved that words next to their team period. And I'll say this even theirs own fans don't think so either, because of the losing they been doing.

At one point in the 70s, half of all NFL merchandise sold was Cowboys merchandise. NFL films does a 30-minute season recap/preview for all teams. Since the Cowboys sold the majority of merchandise, NFL films titled the Cowboys highlight film "America's Team". The title has stuck ever since.

Cowboys were the first team with big time cheerleaders. This gained them alot of nationwide fans. Everyone wanted to watch the Cowboys to ogle the cheerleaders. I think the the Cowboys became America's team because of hot pants & sexy vests.

Because Roger Staubach was the all-american boy QB - Heisman winner and war hero. The big star on the helmets and the cheerleaders too! When you look at the Cowboys - you think AMERICA!

Michael M is correct: Summeral and Brookshire, but esp. Summeral, took it upon themselves to lable the Cowboys "America's Team." I hated it. Could never stand the Cowboys at all and I loved the late 80's when they lost and lost. Funny how one hates a team like that but likes some of the players...Calvin Hill, Golden Richards, Bill Joe DuPree, those guys are all right.....

It was created by their marketing team. If you want to know who "America'a Team" really is, you just have to see who has the greatest fan base of all time... It ain't the Cryboys.

actually, a long time ago pete rozelle went to tex schramm {[the former cowboys g.m.}} and asked him to host a thanksgiving day game. no other teams wanted to host it, and tex saw a marketing opportunity. he said if the nfl would promote the cowboys as americas team, then hed be glad to commit to hosting an annual thanksgiving day game. the nfl had more to do with it than any broadcasters.
