You won't get into trouble legally, it's your ring. It's just like any other gift in that sense, once given all just claim is gone. However, an engagement ring is often quite expensive and there's a lot of emotional baggage that goes with it so lots of guys think they should get it back. It's up to you, but decide if you really want to keep it. It is a symbol of your broken relationship, and some women don't want to hold onto something like that. Also, is it worth the grief he's likely going to put you through trying to get it back?

If the ring isn't all that important to you, you may as well return it.

Actually the laws differ depending on the state you live. Many states consider it a conditional gift and it doesn't matter who broke off the engagement the ring must be returned.

You could be sued for the cost of the ring if you keep it.

Legally it is NOT yours. An engagement ring (contract of marriage) is not a gift, it is an acceptance of marriage. And if it went to court the judge would favor on his side. Since the marriage did not happen the ring (contract if you would look at it that way) needs to be returned to the man. The only time you wouldnt is if the ring belongs to her family- like a family heirloom or something of that nature. Quit being selfish, why would you want it anyway. You need to let it go, it didnt happen, and move on. If he wanted to he could take you to small claims. I have seen it happen, and even if you arent required to return the ring, they may fine you for the value of it in his favor. Good Luck!

An engagement ring is accepting a marriage offer. If you don't get married, you should give it back. If you are married and later get divorced, you can keep the rings.

People can sue over anything. If it goes to court it'll go to small claims and probably will be arbitrated and someone, not a judge will decide if you can keep it. But if its going to cause you that much trouble, just give it back. He gave it to you thinking there would be a long lasting marriage. Since their isnt, he spent this money on you for nothing basically. Just give it back. You wont go to jail or anything if you keep it. But legally he can take you to court over it.

You have to give it back. Here's why. The ring was given to you on the condition of marriage. Rings are not gifts. You did not fulfill your side of the marriage, therefore he has a right to get it back. Morally you should give it back, as well.

I've seen court cases on TV where the judge made some 1 give back the ring. personally if it was me I'd do what I know in my heart is right & give it back.

Mat 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

Legally, it does belong to you, it is a gift. No you will not get in trouble.

However, since it is a gift that symbolizes the future that you were supposed to spend together I'm not sure why you would want to keep it?? IMO, you should return it. You are not legally bound to do so and there is nothing he can do if you won't, but it is the "right" thing to do.

cheers!!

I would give it back. What good can come from a ring that no longer means anything? Do you need the money? If so, try working.
