First of all, I would like to start by saying that the Athletics and the Twins are done, and won't make the playoffs.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Yankees are done. As much as I hate them, they have a good team and they can probably make a final push towards the playoffs. I don't think they will take the division, but the wildcard is a different story. I agree with some of the other people who just love to hate the Yankees because they have always succeeded. The Yankees have been such a dominant franchise in baseball, that people expect them to make the playoffs, and usually a trip to the World Series, and basically, everyone considers in failure if the Yankees don't make the playoffs.

Abby, the Red Sox do buy some of their players, but the Yankees buy there players a lot more. The Red Sox didn't "buy" Gagne, they gave up a top pitching prospect and two others for him. Also, have you noticed that when a stud becomes a free agent, the Yankees always outbid the Red Sox (Johnny Damon, Jose Contreras, A-Rod).

A lot of people hate the Yankees and want to see them not get into the playoffs for once. The reason for this passionate hate is because of all the money the Yankees have, and because the Yankees have been so dominant in the past having won so many World Series. There are a lot of Yankee haters out there who would be happier if the Yankees didn't win the World Series even if their team got crushed. I'm a New Yorker, and I'm proud to be a Yankee fan. The Red Sox "buy" good players too (Eric Gagne, Dice-K...).

Because people are hopeful for a yankee-free play-off season! The Twins are a good team with talent, and look what they did last year. They were 11 games out at the ASB and ended up winning the division.
Last year The A's got lucky.

The yankees will do none of those things this year.

Besides, isn't it time you yankee fans share?
You need to be nice and let other teams play in the post season. You guys need a break from playing in October.
Word has it that A-Rod needs to practice his golf swing, and October is a good month to play golf.

So there you are.

It's pretty obvious - nobody gets as emotionally worked up about either of those teams as they do about the Yankees. There are very few middle ground fans who don't care passionately about loving or hating New York.

Also, the Twins and A's simply don't have the fan base - or the vocal fan base - of the Yankees, whose fans talk about them win or lose. Just as Yankees fans want their team to succeed, those who hate them want badly to see them fail. They've been an incredibly successful organization for a long time, and people despise them for that.

First of all, the Yankees are not done. IF they can get their pitching straightened out, they could be serious contenders.

Now, to answer your question - because the expectation isn't the same. The Yankees are always expected to be there whereas the other teams mentioned are always pleasantly surprised if they make the playoffs.

Because it's the Yankees and it's because the Yankees always win and are always good not to mention 26 World Series titles. People envy the Yankees and the fans because they know they will always have a chance at a championship.

because the yankees are the highest profile team in the league. they're the team that every other team gets compaired to. its like the most popular kid in school losing a fight in front of everyone. people are gonna talk about it for a while. but if some geek got beat up, nobody would care. see what i mean?

Because they are the Yankees. Everyone expects them to be in 1st place all the time, or at least so close to being in first, they can taste it.

However, I never thought they were done, because I'm just another paranoid Boston fan.
