Disk Defragmenter.?

If i run it, what happens. i do know that it will rearrange folders so the drive won't have to go looking for it. but what does that mean. will that reorganize everything. by that i mean. for example if i want to go to pragram files and then etc. will that reorganize everything on program files or what? what does it rearranged.? i have a windows xp.

if you do a disk defrag it will not change the location of your documents or anything, dont worry.

After a while of using you computer, the hard drive forms fragments, which are bits of files scattered all over the place.

All it does is put those fragments in a more sensible order, in turn speeding up your hard drive because it doesnt have to search your entire hard drive to find all the bits of a file you want to open.

Alright, lets start fromt the beginning. When a hard drive saves data, it magnetically writes it into little sections of the hard drive called sectors. But sometimes, it has to spread the data across many non-sequential sectors, meaning that it could write data to sector 5, then sector 10, the sector 14, etc. When this happens, it take s the hard drive longer to retrieve data when you ask for it because it has to do all that extra spinning to get it. What Disk Defragmenter does is rearranges the data so that all the data is sequentially into the sectors. So instead of having data in sectors 5, 7, 10 and 14, Disk Defragmenter will reorganize it into sectors 6,7,8,9, & 10, making very easy for the hard drive to retrieve data. And don't worry, this has nothing to fo with where you save it, whatever you saved will be in the spot where you saved, this is only has to do with how the hard drive handles it. :D

It just places the blocks a file uses in an order that is more efficient for the hardrive so that when you load a file into an application it is loaded faster. The file locations as you see them remain the same. Meaning files in My Documents will still be in My Documents but the blocks the file uses have been moved to different places on a disk. Basically a disk is divided into blocks\sectors where a file or part of a file is stored. When you click on a file name the file system knows which blocks belong to a file.

A defragmenter will not rearrange files in any way that you can see. So don't worry about that. What it does is take files that may been scattered all over the disk and put them onto consecutive locations. That will help speed up disk access a bit and reduce the workload on your hard dive.

Basically, defragmenter just organizes the disk. See, every time you add or delete items on the hard drive, it creates spaces in between the files(to put it simply). So, when you defrag, you remove those spaces and sometimes create some more space for more data on your HD. Also, it makes it easier for the HD to access the data, since it organized.

disk defrag. only moves the location of the virtual files. What it does is move files to the rest of it's file so it can find the stuff faster. It's like cleaning your room. You don't get more free space, but you know where everything is. Thats what the defrag does.

disk defrag only arranges the free space, by moving clusters of data to the required places. It frees up space on our disk. it doesnot cause any physical movemeent of your files or programs. even after defrag, your system stays as it was before and all the files in their place, but the free space is increased.
