To slowly and gently soften the water and lower the pH, you can add some driftwood tot he tank or peat moss in the filter. The problem you might run into is at water change time. You will have to match the new water to the old. Using R/O or distilled water to mix with your tap water is the easiest and best way to accomplish that trick.

With water this alkaline i'm able to assure you that not something speedy will artwork. ingredients will only leap the ph around and reason extra injury then sturdy. Driftwood and peat moss, which do tend to diminish the ph, will do not something while the PH is already this extreme. the only determination has already been reported, which became to mixture it with distilled or opposite osmosis dealt with water in a stability that supplies you what you choose. See, alkaline (extreme ph) water incorporates salts and minerals that make it alkaline. Any ingredients, wood, and so on. will make contributions to attempt to combat it, yet won't get rid what's inflicting it in the 1st place remains there- so the water will combat lower back, and you will in no way win. if your faucet water particularly is this extreme then the above reported blending of water is your basically effectual determination. while you're taking ph 6 water and combine it with your 9, with a bit of luck you could attain a satisfied medium. undergo in techniques that whilst your fish may be reported at ph 7, any consumer-friendly aquarium fish can easily cope with as much as eight or so, and frequently extra. additionally bear in mind that PH doubles with each and each value. So the version between 6.8 and six.9 is a lot, much less then the version between 9 and 9.a million. At your stages it turns into extra sturdy to administration and can be risky hence: Ammonia and Nitrite are extra deadly simply by fact the PH gets bigger. With a ph of 6 an ammonia point of a million would be conceivable, at a PH of 9, that's deadly. So your determination at this component is to pass in the process the attempt of paying for for or filtering water for your self, or forsaking fish altogether and attempting possibly reptiles or something else. FYI, the clarification faucet water is frequently a minimum of impartial and frequently alkaline is by way of the fact acid water (under ph 7) rusts the metallic of the pipes of the water device.

These levels are only important if you plan on breeding them or if they are wild caught. Many fish keepers will use peat in their filters. You can buy peat for your aquarium at a fish store. Don't use peat from the local hardware store. This will soften the water and lower the pH. The most important thing for your rams is high water quality. A large piece of driftwood will also help

Add organic matter, a little at a time.

Back in the 1980s, I had a tank where, instead of having those colored stones at the bottom, I had spagnum moss. The water was slightly muddy, but the fish seemed to be a lot more laid back, and fish losses dropped to *zero*.

What's more, this tank calmed *me* down a lot more, too.

the most effective way is to buy a reverse osmosis system (they are pretty cheap nowadays, got one for 80 euros a month ago) and replace part of your water with the soft water coming from the system.
