You can use a scrap of low-tack tape like painter's tape, or get a little holder for the roll of stamps.

You're supposed to keep them in a special stamp-roll-holder thingy. I have an old one that is brass and belonged to my grandma. It has her initials engraved on it. I may lose a book of stamps that is tossed in a drawer, but I always know where the stamp roll is. Mine is round, about the size of a mini-donut gem. the top unscrews to put the stamps in; there is a slot in the side for the stamps to come out. Hope that makes sense. I suppose you can use a little tupperware but it's not as cute.
