Sometimes hanging on to make believe things can be a form of escape and/or fantasy to take a break from everyday life.
However, you can get into trouble if you start to confuse your "make believe world" with what is actually happening in your life.
On the other hand, some people have actually channeled their make believe fantasies into artwork or stories which help others temporarily escape into another world.

I don't know what it would be. Santa is real, lots of money will fall in my lap, big foot is real, what isn't real that I believe is? No, I'm not hanging on to make believe.

To quote Adam from Mythbusters.
" I reject your reality and substitute my own."
Wise words to live by.
