As cruel as it sounds, the death of older generations. Bigotry dies with the older generations and America's youth is profoundly accepting and liberal. Its only a matter of time before the country is run by the more fair minded people and the Republican party dies out.

The American Psychiatric Association pulling homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Of course lots happened before that happened, and lots after, too.

I'd say awareness and knowledge has helped a lot in bringing about tolerance and acceptance. There's still a long road ahead, though.

In the United States, it would be the Supreme Court ruling in the case of Lawrence v. Texas.

The court ruled that the state laws outlawing consensual homosexual sex were all illegal, therefore making homosexual sex as legal as heterosexual sex.
