Are they that selfish?

Take for example a good friend of mine - her husband left her, and she has to feed 3 children. She works 12 hour days, and if it weren't for welfare, she and her children would be on the streets!!!

Is that really what conservatives support?? Putting FAMILIES on the streets?? I try to help out whenever I can, but I too am short for cash.

Despite all this, conservatives want to cut welfare spending!!

At least the clintons never gave billions of our tax dollars to Haliburton to "fix" New Orleans and then leave the country while people died.

The ironic thing about government handouts is that it not only crushes the spirit of the person receiving the aid, but it makes people who would normally give to charity more tight fisted.

In countries with high taxes for social programs, people are overwhelmingly callous towards the poor. They don't want to give their own money. They figure that's the government's responsibility.

As it stands in the U.S., people are still quite generous, but if you start taxing more, that spirit of generosity that is so a part of the American persona will start to disappear.

The government was never meant to be a nanny. If a person is in need, they traditionally relied on their family, friends, church, ethnic organizations, trade unions, etc. There are a lot of women who get pregnant without any thought to the future because there is no stigma attached anymore. They don't worry about getting pregnant because they just assume the government will bail them out.

Fifty years ago, when there was still a real stigma attached to being a single, pregnant woman, people felt a sense of shame, usually brought on by religious beliefs. However, people who expect taxpayers to support them because of their irresponsible behavior should feel shame that they are a financial burden.

The woman you mention had her husband leave. He is required by law to pay child support. He can easily be tracked because he needs to use his SSN. If he refuses to pay, employers can automatically dock his pay. A police officer can knock on his door and arrest him. If she isn't receiving money, she isn't trying.

As a matter of record, I support a lot of programs that will never benefit me. I vote for the good of the country, not my own personal interest. That is because I am a Conservative. The way Liberals get votes is by pandering to the needy, the lazy, the desperate, the uneducated, and the confused. They hold out the prospect of "free" goodies to these people who think the government is like a 365 days a year Santa Claus.

Conservatives, led by Newt Gingrich, forced major welfare reforms during Clinton's administration. While the Democrats used scare tactics, saying that women and children would be dying in the streets, nothing of the sort happened. In fact, it's been a wholly positive experience. People used to get stuck on welfare, not just for a couple years for temporary assistance, but for a lifetime. There were entire families, three generations long, who had never held a job.... not one person in a whole extended family ever worked because welfare creates a mindset of dependence. These people couldn't even imagine themselves competing in the real world. That's what government handouts do; they destroy the human spirit and make people feel helpless and worthless.

This woman you cite should find a church or charitable organization........ and there are many, that specialize in single mothers. The taxpayers should not have to endlessly pay for her.

Your somewhat top the Conservatives have by no ability represented the middle classification yet why could they? Labour could pretend to symbolize the working classification becasue they are nonetheless funded in many circumstances via the unions. The Conservatives are funded via billionaires like Ashcroft who're no longer middle classification and don't care appropriate to the middle classification.

In the US we have 300 million people and just as many stories. I am opposed to welfare. The husband should pay child support. If the mother cannot take care of her children, they should be sent to foster care. I am not responsible for the problems or bad behavior of other people.

Not with the money I earn, I don't. If you're so short of cash, why don't you take an extra job or sell your plasma screen TV to help your friend instead of demanding I fork over the loot?

Take responsibility for your own life and stop mooching off me. I have my own friends and family to look out for.
