I know that it is up to the teacher to ensure the safety of fellow colleques and other students by alerting proper authority of suspicious activity but am I missing anything other than that?

Always notify the proper administrator and explain why you saw. If you do not notify a person of authority, you can be held criminally and civilly liable for what happens. Remember CYA. It is an important concept for all teachers.

No. I don't think that teachers generally have anything to do with such searches. They probably are responsible for keeping the campus in order during the searches, but they don't usually do the searches themselves, even if they were the ones who may have tipped administrators off.
