Why is he only a prince?

Because the Queen inherited the throne from her father King George VI. Prince Philip is a prince of the Danish royal house, whose grandfather was elected King of Greece and later deposed. He is a descendant of Queen Victoria, like Queen Elizabeth.

The husband of a reigning queen does not become a king in the UK, because he would outrank her. Usually they are given the title of Prince Consort. On the other hand, the wife of a king becomes a queen consort.

When the king died, his eldest daughter, Elizabeth became Queen. Phillip was actually in the line of succession somewhere, but way, way down it. When a man and woman marry, the woman takes he man's name and/or title. But, it does not work the other way around. So, when Phillip marred the then Princess, he did not get any title at all. Well, as a wedding present he was made a Duke. After the Queen became queen, she gave Phillip the title Prince. Also, if he had been called King - kings outrank queens, so, he would have been in charge, something he is not entitled to. Charles will the king next (and Camila queen), and then William and Kate. But, Camila and Kate will be Queen Consorts, not Queen Regnants (like Elizabeth). Their titles are by courtesy only, where Elizabeth's is "real," i.e., she is the Queen with the power.

There can only be one royal in charge. When King George VI died the next successor was Queen Elizabeth II. In 1952 she ascended to the throne. Since Queen Elizabeth is Queen through her bloodline that makes her the royal in charge. If she were able to make Prince Phillip the King then he would by rank be in charge. Since he is not of the royal bloodline he is not eligible for Kingship. Prince Phillip is only a Prince because the Queen bestowed the title upon him since he is not of English royal heritage. Before she became the Queen, Prince Phillip was a Duke. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip are actually 3rd cousins.

It just some ancient rule, I mean when Prince William becomes King, his wife would be Queen. It does not work the other way around a bit sexist eh? Prince Philip was Prince of Greece and Denmark before he married Elizabeth. He had to give up his title, however I suppose he thought it was a fair trade to father possible the future King or Queen of England.

I'm afraid that nearly all of the previous answers are completely wrong.

Philip was born HRH Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, and mistakenly gave that up to become a British citizen (he need not have; as the Sophia Immigration Act gave all legitimate non-Catholic descendants of the Electress SOphia of Hanover immediate British citizenship). Men never take their title from their wives, so his rank did not change on his marriage to Elizabeth (and as it has been pointed out, with a reigning Queen one never has a King, as a King would outrank the Queen). Therefore he become, following their wedding and by royal decree of her father, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. However, only ten years later did Elizabeth make him a Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Because King is a higher rank than Queen. If Charles is the next King of England, Camilla then becomes the Queen (aaaahhh!!!) by marriage. But for the Queen to be the highest ranking official, her husband can only be a prince.

It's a totally old fashioned sexist type thingy.

Because she was the daughter of the former king. Prince Phillip asked her to make him king once. She said no, she was the queen, she would not have a king.

Because he is a foreigner. HM the Queen could ask parliament to make him King Consort. She has not even made him Prince Consort. Interesting...
