You will need several forms of security for your computer to be safe from malware.

1 Anti-Virus(like AVG)
2 Anti-Spyware
3 Firewall
4 Keep your operating system updated

Now there are many programs out there that are free and will keep your computer secure

Personally, I use

1) AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0
2) Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/
Adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
3) Comodo Firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
4) Windows XP with the latest updates

You can have many forms of antispyware but you should only have 1 antivirus and one firewall.

Avast and AVG are both totally worthless. They are JUNK. I recommend active virus shield. It is by far the best free antivirus program you will ever use.
