No. They were not technically part of the chase. He didn't cause the crash. It was caused by their greed for a scoop.

No way, the only responsible are the TV News services they worked at for forcing them to rush over there to get the "exclusive". It was also informed that the pilots were in radio communication with their news people on the TV station instead of paying attention to his flying (you can't fly, talk and follow a car at the same time; that's NOT safe or smart).
The driver is only responsible for any death or injury that can come from his "direct actions" (like any car or person he hit or force out the road). If a helicopter crash over 100 people on the ground it's not he's fault if he didn't provoked it.
By law "direct action" means that the driver should have done something against the pilots or their choppers like shooting at them.
I agree the driver must pay for his own crimes but not for the pilot's mistake. Even the police and other news agencies agree it was a mechanical or pilots mistake the responsible for the crash.
As a matter of fact you can be sure the family of those guys will be suing the News services pretty soon. All those choppers flying around for stupid traffic violations are just accidents waiting to happen.

No he should not be held accountable. He was breaking the law but it was the choice of the news channels to have the helicopters make chase. He should only be responsible for any deaths he directly caused on the ground by his actions.

Why should police be held accountable?
That was strictly pilot error on their part. They were watching the show instead of paying attention to flying. Flying includes being aware of where you are at all times and your surroundings at all times. Not watching what is happening on the ground unless it directly affects you and your craft be it plane or copter.

Yes he should be.
If it weren't for his running from the police the accident would never have happened.
At the very least it should be 2 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
ADD: They weren't just trying to get a story! The local news agencies work in concert with law enforcement to help track pursuits. How do you think police departments who either do not have or have limited access to aircraft , track people who are running? If the ground crew loses sight of a fleeing suspect then the helicopter pilot can direct them where to go.
Do you think they risk their lives for fun? How can you blame them for their own deaths? Part of the service these air crews provide is to give live coverage to citizens so that they may better avoid the danger of there chases and protect themselves and their families.

Most die in their sleep of old age. There are hundreds of thousands of pilots in many professions. Only a tiny fraction are ever killed, but if you are so morbid to try and imagine fiery deaths, decapitations, and bodies blown to bits, I'm sure there are some sick websites you could find.

If you answered yes, then explain this...Let's say the reporters were flying around "chasing" Lindsay Lohan, who was on her way to the bar. They collide and crash. Who is responsible? Lindsay? The pilots?, The news company they worked for paying them to go do this? or was it President Bush?

No, he shouldn't be charged.
It was their choice to follow the chase. There is nothing that required them to follow it.
It was their actions during that time that caused the accident.
If anything, the news organizations that they belonged to should be held responsible before the guy that was being chased was.

Yes, I think he should be held accountable. Those were deaths that occurred as a direct result of his committing a crime and trying to evade police (another crime). In Texas, any death that results during the commission of another crime is a capital offense, and warrants the death penalty.
