This question can be interpreted in two ways. There is mindless, with focus...and mindless, without focus. I don't think mindless without focus is such a state. Without intent to empty the mind...the mind will wander.

That said...the pros and cons of mindless with focus are:

Pro: Empties the mind from clutter allowing one to 'hear'.
Pro: Meditative (wax on...wax off) many additional benefits.
Pro: Repetitive motion stimulates neurotransmitter release, which promotes relaxation (rocking a baby).

Con: Can be addictive
Con: Can give a false sense of control
Con: Can cause your head to hurt.

You can't spend all day solving the world's problems. Your thoughts need a break, too. Mindless activities keep your mind functioning on auto pilot while it refreshes for the next major dilemma. Keeping our bodies active is the best exercise for our brain.
